TROUBLESHOOTING GUIDE FOR ASSESSMENT 2.

for dummies

CONTENT

Assignment 2 is a professional community engagement report.

All these points are NECESSARY parts of your report:

1. Explain why the community interests you in a professional capacity;

2. Explain why your chosen community is important, what they offer both the society and the individual;

3. Describe the challenges faced by your chosen community and how they arose, supported by evidence (community mapping);

4. Based on those challenges, assess what the community's needs might be, and explain how you would prioritise those needs;

5. Describe the goals of that community and ways to achieve their needs. Articulate these goals based on your own understanding from your insider perspective, as well as conversations you might have had with community-peers;

6. Identify and explain what skills you might need (as a member of that community) to maximise the success of achieving your chosen community's goals.

Choose a community that is known to you, or one that is easily observable. Do not choose a business or franchise, as you will find it almost impossible to analyse their needs beside profit or monetary gain.

Do NOT choose very large or scattered communities (such as the Indigenous People of Australia, or the Christian Community, or the Cross Fit community) as this will affect your capacity to analyse them properly. Instead, pick a smaller group (such as an Indigenous association that you know of, a local Church community, a local sporting club) that you can observe and come up with ideas for.

STRUCTURE

A professional report can be structured in many ways, provided it has a coherent and clear flow.

A possible structure for your report could be:

- Introduction: covers points 1 and 2. weHHer(Here you explain why your chosen community interests you in terms of the career you are pursuing. You then explain what positive impact your community has on individuals and society)

- Community Mapping: covers point 3. (Here you use external sources to describe your community, focusing on its challenges. In this section, it would be good to have statistical data, charts, etc to support your arguments)

- Needs Assessment: covers point 4 (Here you explain what your community needs to overcome the challenges that you have outlined in the previous section)

- Community Goals: covers point 5 (Here you explain what the goals of your community are in relation to its needs and its challenges. Use your insider’s perspective or external sources to underpin your claims)

- Conclusion: covers point 6 (here you summarise the findings and recommendations of your report, and add a short reflection on what you need to learn to help maximise the capacity of your community to achieve its goals)

There will not be any deduction for students using different report structures as long as they make sense and they cover all the points.

INTRODUCTION
    Lebanese Australians form a considerable part of population in Australia. They are the citizens or permanent residents of Australia but of Lebanese ancestry. It is a very wide community base with diverse belief systems and cultural aspects. Although Lebanese people have been living in the country since over two centuries, there have been a lot of cases and incidents of racism against these people (Moran, 2011). Through this study a thorough analysis of their cu
ent condition has been presented along with an identification of their needs and expectations. In addition, an analysis of community goals has also been presented in this report.
COMMUNITY MAPPING
    Lebanese people have been living in Australia for over two decades (Dandy & Rogelia , 2010). They primarily follow Islam religion. Figure 1 shows that number of people following Islam in the country have grown considerably. On this basis, it can be said that Australian people have become tolerant and accepting of other religions. But this data does not show the number of Lebanese people in the country. Herein it can be observed that Islam now is one of the major cultures in the country. Between 2011 and 2016 the number of Lebanese people have increased. But in recent some years cases and incidents of racial discrimination against these people has increased significantly.
Figure 1: Religious Affiliations, 2011 and 2016
Source: (RELIGION IN AUSTRALIA, 2016)
     (Booth & Andrew , 2012) found that households where the reference person’s religion was Islam or they were of Muslim orientation, had a lower weekly household income. This indicates that the Lebanese Muslim people are the victims of racial discrimination. These people have very low income, which then has to be shared among many members. This makes it extremely difficult for Lebanese people to lead a healthy and comfortable life (Dunn & Jacqueline , 2011). The main reason behind their condition is the fact that they are not native to the country. Since their ancestors had migrated to Australia, Lebanese people are not given much attention by the authorities as well as a large share of the indigenous population. Due to this reason, it has become very difficult for the people of Lebanese orientation to even fulfil their most basic needs and desires. In addition to this, the level of unemployment among Lebanese people is also very low. This further worsens their situation. It has been observed that these people are not even able to fulfil their most basic desires such as food, shelter, and clothing. Lack of jobs and low income has worsen their condition (Booth & Andrew , 2012). Figure 2 provides information about weekly household income of people belonging to different religious backgrounds. The rate of unemployment among the Lebanese individuals is significantly higher than people belonging to other cultural backgrounds. It can be supported through fact that the rate of unemployment was 8.6% which is a considerable number (Masanauskas, 2014). Figure 3 shows the jobs that most of...
