Motivation is an important tool linked to employee’s job satisfaction at work, which leads to organizational effectiveness and success. Hence, a manager’s job is to identify the underlying motive of an employee to perform a task. Motives are nothing but the needs of the individuals. These needs are having a certain priority according to the psychologists. Among various motivation theories em
aced by the American business the Maslow’s hierarchy of needs theory is widely known. A
aham Maslow introduced his famous motivation theory in the year 1943.The theory basically denotes that a person’s motivation depends upon his needs. The lower level needs must be satisfied before attaining higher level needs. Maslow’s theory of motivation states that there are five levels of needs: physiological, security, social, esteem and self actualization. (Slocum, Hellriegel & Hellriegel, 2007)
Physiological Need: This is the bottom level need in Maslow’s hierarchy. Physiological needs involve basic survival .e.g. the need for food, water, shelter. The employees motivated by physiological needs are not concerned about the type of job they are doing. They will take up the job which meets their basic survival needs. Once this need is satisfied employees they can move to higher order needs.
Security Needs: Safety needs not only cater to person’s physical safety and security, but also his personal security. For Example: getting a secure job. Employees motivated by security needs value their jobs to defend themselves against losing their basic level needs. Employer protects the employees from work related hazards and give the employees a sense of security by providing them health, life and disability insurance.
Social Needs: Social needs are a person’s need for friendship, love and belongingness. After the physiological and security needs are satisfied social needs emerge. People value their work as a way to establish warm and friendly inter personal relationship. Employers can organize sports program, cultural activities etc to promote a sense of belonging in the organization.
Esteem Needs: Esteem needs are the desires for achievement recognition and respect. People with this need want them to be perceived as competent and able. They look for prestigious job
