Lithium Ion Battery- An Introduction and History
Lithium Ion battery is a type of rechargeable battery which charges and discharges using lithium ions. It is based on the previous battery technology using lithium metal negatives. The battery is named after the term ‘lithium ion’ which is an electrochemical system in which lithium ions are exchanged between the electrodes during charging and discharging. (McDowall J.)
The first non-rechargeable lithium batteries were developed in the early 1970’s and were famous up to 1980’s. (Meadows C.)But these batteries contained the lithium metal which reacted violently to temperature changes. After a Japanese man incurred facial burns from being exposed to a lithium metal battery, people became more serious in developing a safer version of the lithium battery. This is how the lithium metal battery research intensified. The phenomenal invention of the intercalation battery electrode technology gave lithium ions rechargeability.
