Context
As consumers become more aware of the impact of their actions on the planet, sustainability is

the world are cu

support sustainable social, economic and environmental development. The United Nations World
Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) is ‘responsible for the promotion of responsible, sustainable and
universally accessible tourism’ and ‘assists destinations in their sustainable positioning in ever more
complex and international markets’ (UNWTO, n.d.). This assessment will allow students to consider
sustainability issues in global destinations and consider the role of the UNWTO in supporting
sustainable development.

Overview of the Chosen Case Study and Destination
Venice is a popular tourist destination for Italians from other areas of the country as well as millions of visitors from across the world. This city is a famous tourist destination since it is the capital of the Veneto region of Northern Italy, which borders the Adriatic Sea. It is made up of 150 canals and small islands connected by foot
