In the poem, “The Highwayman,” Noyes (1906) focused on depicting the way of life of
the outlaws – a specific group of people, who, even though criticized by the mainstream society,
are actually the product of the myriads of social prejudices and injustices that culminate into a
menace. The “Highwayman” is the embodiment of those people who have lost faith on law and
order implemented by the society out of stereotyped views. It is a poem in which, instead of
criticizing the outlaws, the poet has shown sympathy and empathy for them.
