It sometimes takes time for leaders to transition their focus from themselves to serving the needs of others. Towards a Servant-Leadership Model
Servant leadership is a model of leadership whose main focus is employees rather than the leader. This leadership model focuses on how to assist employees and followers to develop and grow. In order to assess my own standing with regards to the Servant-Leader model I have undertaken the Leader’s Self-Insight 6.2 self-assessment in which I have evaluated my qualities as a leader and how likely am I to be a servant leader.
I took the time to define what a Servant leader is and compared it with my leadership characteristics and where I needed improvement and development to be a model Servant leader. I also charted out my plan to put my skills to action and pondered over how to use it to influence others and improve my followers’ performance. I tried to decipher the best way to function as a group and channel my group’s efforts towards achieving our collective goals without compromising on the personal goals of my teammates.
In the assessment, I scored a 3 which is above average in both Participative and Servant dimensions and a 2 in Stewardship. In Authoritarian, I scored a below average 1.
I realize through scoring above average in both Participative and the Servant dimensions that I am really close to being a Servant Leader. However, I also need to be a bit more assertive as I scored low in the Authoritarian dimension.
