As has been discussed in the lectures and readings, it is important to consider issues of gender as we study jazz history. Women have always been a part of jazz history and have made important contributions to the development of the music. However, women have also faced a disproportionate number of obstacles to success and have historically been under-represented and under-recognized in jazz history.
In this response paper, discuss the role that women played in jazz history. Consider the following: What women have played a significant part in jazz history, and why are they important? What obstacles did these women face? How did race and gender intersect to present challenges for women jazz musicians.
First, read the excerpt (posted on Moodle) fromStormy Weather: The Music and Lives of a Century of Jazzwomenby Linda Dahl and listen to the short interview with Dahl here:

Then, respond to the prompt based on the reading and interview, the lectures/documentary footage included in the lecture videos, and information from the textbook.
While this isn’t a full-fledged research paper, please be detailed and thoughtful in your response. The response papers should be written in a more “formal,” academic manner and be free of grammatical errors. Any direct quotations or paraphrased material from the book, podcast, or other sources should be properly cited in MLA Style.
