As has been discussed in the lectures and readings, issues of race have played a major role throughout jazz history, including in the earliest years when the music was first developing. In this response paper, you are asked to discuss how race, African-American history, and social/cultural events in early American history impacted and influenced the early development of jazz music.
First, you should listen to “The Birth of American Music,” a podcast that is part of the 1619 Project. The podcast can be found here:
https://www.nytimes.com/2019/09/06/podcasts/1619-black-american-music-appropriation.html
After listening to the podcast, respond to the prompt based on what you heard in the podcast and what you have read about in the textbook readings.
As you respond, consider the following:
·
What was the importance of Minstrelsy in the development of jazz and American popular music?
· What role did the Great Migration play in jazz history?
·How did slavery, segregation, and racial hierarchies in places like New Orleans and the South impact the music?
While this isn’t a full-fledged research paper, please be detailed and thoughtful in your response. The response papers should be written in a more “formal,” academic manner and be free of grammatical errors. Any direct quotations or paraphrased material from the book, podcast, or other sources should be properly cited in MLA Style.
