1. On the leadership motivation assessment, I scored a 58. That score indicated that I have a strong motivation to lead. Early on in my career, I never thought of myself as a leader. Over time I developed those skills and was lucky to have good mentors. I'm currently in a leadership role and am enjoying it. I like working in a team setting to inspire and motivate people. However, there are also challenges that come with being a leader. One of those challenges is managing the different personalities. Possessing strong emotional intelligence is key to working alongside and understanding the people with whom one works. I hope to gain some insight from this course to improve my leadership skills.
On the goal orientation assessment, I scored a 59, which means that I have met some of my goals. That is a disappointment to realize. I tend to set too many goals for myself, and, as a result, I end up not meeting some of my goals. Even though the assessment results were disappointing, I would like to work on this area of improvement by setting smaller goals for myself and setting more realistic and attainable goals within a reasonable time frame. I believe that setting and achieving goals allow us to grow as individuals.
2. Some of the individual differences that are important to me when looking for a team member are the different skill sets they bring. It's essential to employ people from diverse backgrounds versus organizing a team with the same skill sets and backgrounds. It strengthens a team to hear the voices of people who have different knowledge. We can all learn from each other. The characteristics I would want in a team member are excellent communication skills, a positive attitude, active listening, flexibility and the ability to organize. All of these characteristics form an excellent foundation for a solid and effective team.

M1-Motivation to Lead and Goal Orientation

1. Describe your motivation to lead, and your goal orientation.

I scored a 62 on the “Motivated to Lead” quiz. This score indicates a strong motivation to lead. I have always found myself torn between my drive to lead and my desire to watch how others interact. I have found that some of the leaders that inspire me know when to sit back and when to step forward. That is a quality I am working to strengthen in myself.

As for my goal orientation, I have no trouble there. I teach classes on goal setting, so I am constantly looking for the best information on the process of setting and achieving my goals. I am currently reading “Atomic Habits” by James Clear. I am well versed in SMART goals, and I am familiar with SMARTER goals as well. I have set my goals both in my personal life and professional life. Occasionally those goals overlap.

2. Describe the individual differences that are important to you when looking for a team member and the characteristics you would want in a team member.

In a keynote address that Sara Blakely, founder of Spanx, gave at the Association for Talent Development (ATD) conference in May she said she hires her weaknesses. By that she meant that she hires people for her team that possess the skills that she lacks. To use myself as an example, I am energetic, creative, and a big picture thinker. I work better when I’m part of a team. If I were to look for team members, I might look for people that are more detail oriented. Someone that is good at looking at the little details I might miss because I’m a big picture thinker. I also need someone that is going to be good for long term projects. I am so energetic and passionate that I can get bored and burned out on projects after a while. I need someone that can help me keep going when I’m lose interest. I also need someone to take charge. While I am perfectly capable of leading, I don’t do it as well when I’m in a more creative role.

Hi Sathapasa,
I am very happy that you have achieved an analysis of the leadership motivation assessment that you have in yourself. You can prove to be a valuable asset for any organization, where you can exhibit your leadership qualities and apply them to leading the team. However, as I can see you are upset with your score of goal orientation assessment, which I do not spite of at all, because it is not possible for anyone...
