You are employed as design consultant on a project to build a new civic centre. The building is intended to be a landmark within the city, and part of the design brief is that it should be attractive and eco-friendly, using sustainable resources where possible. M3 It is decided that the new building should be quite striking. The decision is that the roof should be metallic. Consider three metals that would be appropriate to use. In your discussion you should emphasise how the properties of the materials lend themselves to this use. Decide on one metal to recommend and outline why you have chosen this relation to its properties instead of the other two. D1 The internal environment must be suited to the needs of the users and must be comfortable. Suggest two locations within the new building that would be used either by staff or the public. Discuss in detail how the various thermal, visual and auditory factors can affect the comfort of the users of these spaces. State clearly any acceptable parameters that are relevant in your discussion. Justify the values you have stated. D2 The new building contains a great many timber elements, not only as decorative features but also as load bearing members. The foundations are concrete. Referring to these two materials discuss the possible sources of deterioration and the means by which specific deteriorations can be prevented.
