Silver arsenate (Ag3AsO4) is a slightly soluble salt with Ksp = 1.0x10-22 M4 at 25 °C.
Ag3AsO4(s) ? 3Ag+(aq) + AsO43-(aq)
i. Calculate the molar solubility of silver arsenate in pure water at 25 °C.
ii. Calculate the molar solubility of silver arsenate in 0.10 M AgNO3.
Question 2
Milk of magnesia is an ‘over the counter’ pharmaceutical preparation used as a laxative and for heartburn. It can be prepared by saturating water with magnesia (MgO). At 25 °C, a magnesia suspension has a pH of XXXXXXXXXXWrite a balanced equation for the equilibrium between the MgO(s) and the ions it produces in solution. Calculate the equilibrium constant for this reaction at 25 °C. What is the solubility of MgO in water?
Question 3

Question 1
Silver arsenate (Ag3AsO4) is a slightly soluble salt with Ksp = 1.0x10-22 M4 at 25 °C.
Ag3AsO4(s) ↔ 3Ag+(aq) + AsO43-(aq)
i. Calculate the molar solubility of silver arsenate in pure water at 25 °C.
ii. Calculate the molar solubility of silver arsenate in 0.10 M AgNO3.
Ans. (i) Let the molar solubility of Ag+ = AsO43- = s
Thus,
Ksp = [Ag+]^3 [AsO43-] = (3s)^3 * s = 27s^4
Or, 1.0x10-22 = 27s^4
Thus, s= 1.39*10^-6 M
(ii) Concentration of Ag+ ions in pure water = 3s = 3*1.39*10^-6 = 4.17*10^-6M
But in presence of AgNO3, concentration of Ag+ from AgNO3 is 0.1M which is much greater than that obtained from water. Thus, [Ag+] = 0.1M
Therefore, Ksp = (0.1)^3 * s
Or, s = Ksp / (0.1)^3 = (1.0x10-22 )/ 0.001 =...
