Odyssey is a renowned epic poem which was written by Homer in the epic Iliad. This poem was composed between the year 900 and 700 B.C. There are various legendary events along with historical struggles described in the poem. Through this poem, Homer is able to describe a 10-year long battle which was fought in a city known as Ilion which is presently visible in the ruins of Troy situated in Western Turkey. There was a war named Trojan War which was fought between the early king of Greece and the society of Troy. The actual cause of the war was the beautiful women and queen named Helen who ran off from her husband Menelaus, who was the Greek King then. She settled with Paris who was the prince of Troy. In the second epic it portrays the story of a Greek soldier named Odysseus to get home post the Trojan War. The Greek seized Troy led by King Agamemnon which was for a period of 10 years. The Greek king captured Chryseis who was a Trojan woman and the daughter of God Apollo. Later Apollo cursed the Greek king who was plagued with diseases. Achilles who was a commander of King Agamemnon suggested him to return back and release Chryseis. In exchange of Chryseis, the king took the daughter of Achilles, Briseis. On this Achilles became annoyed and betrayed the king. It was Odysseus who insisted King Agamemnon to continue with the war. King Priam who was the princess of Troy attacks Agamemnon, Diodemus and Odysseus with his two sons Hector and Paris and them. But it was the champion of war Achilles who killed Hector and let his corpse to rot. Later King Priam begs for his son Hector’s corpse for funeral after twelve long days of war. The Iliad ends here (Leeming).
