ENGG6830 - Project Management Assignment
Project Management Task – Tools
Part 1 - Plan

Due by Friday April 5th 2019
This is an individual assessment.

Installing an Assembly Line of Packaging Machines

This assessment has been developed to provide enough information to enable development of a project
plan. In the planning stage, you are required to determine tasks, some durations, predecessors and
allocate resources.

The Scenario:

You have been asked to plan a project for the internal installation and implementation of an assembly
line of X new plastic injection machines ($80,000= each) and Y new drilling machines ($8,500= each)
using the company existing personnel. The requirements are:

s Ordering the machines
s Unpack the imported pre-ready machines for installation
s Lay the machine foundations
s Lay electrical cabling
s Installation
s Connect the machine to power supply
s Commissioning

NOTE:
X and Y co
espond to your student number’s last digit and your student number’s second last digit
espectively. In the case that any of the digits is zero, just take the digit that is not zero as the value for
X or Y. If both digits are zero, then take 7 as the value for each X and Y.

The project is planned to start on, Monday, June 3rd XXXXXXXXXXTHE EXPECTED DURATION OF THE
PROJECT IS NO LONGER THAN 85 DAYS.

The schedule will be based on a standard 40-hour working week, and consider that the following day is
a holiday: Monday June 10th.

Your project planning should allow for:

s Management’s Approval of project (allow 3 days, 3 hours cost) - Manager
s Machines have to be ordered (1 day, 6= hours cost) – Technical manager.
s Management’s Approval of installation project once the machines have a
ived (allow 5
days, 2 hours cost) - Manager.
s Order necessary equipment, Electrical cables, cement, etc. costing $9,700= (1 day, 4 hours
cost) – Technical manager.
s Machines and necessary equipment a
ival will take 3 weeks – 21 days.
s Allow 7 days for foundations to harden – Technical Assistants and fitter take 1 day doing
this.
s Allow 3 days for cabling work for all machines - Electrician.
s Allow ½ a day unpacking per machine – Technical Assistant.
s An injection machine is estimated to take 2 days to be installed by two people – A
Technical Assistant and a Fitter
s A drilling machine is estimated to take 4 days to be installed by two people – A Technical
Assistant and a Fitter.
s Testing each injection machine is estimated to take 4 hours (½ a day) each – One Technical
Assistant.
s Testing each drilling machine is estimated to take 6 hours each - One Technical Assistant.

Note: You might notice that some tasks have duration and cost that are not equal, e.g. allow 4 days and
7 hours cost. Both are used as they are, duration will affect the Gantt chart and activity network,
ut the cost is effective working time associated to the task and therefore its cost.

The company's resources are as follows:
K. Tan - Manager $80/hr
J. Wilson - Technical Manager $60/hr
T. Gunther - Chief Accountant $45/hr
T. McMaster - Electrician $35/hr
B. Farmer - Fitter $30/hr
B. Picossi - Technical Assistant #1 $25/hr
B. Barnes - Technical Assistant #2 $25/hr

You need to take the following into account:

s Electricians can only work on the installation during weekends, so as to not inte
upt power
supply (rate of labour per hour on weekends is 1.25).
s Two people are required to install a machine (a fitter and a technical assistant).
s Testing can be done once installed and during weekdays.
You are required to submit:
s A WBS for the project including personnel costs. It could be one of:
o If you manage the project using any project management software like ProjectLi
e,
the one it supplies can be submitted,
o A graphic done in any graphical software adding the personnel cost.
s A Dependency Matrix of the project as per lecture slides.
s AOA Network identifying times and Critical Path as per lecture slides.
s A Gantt Chart of the plan. It could be one of:
o If you manage the project using any project management software like ProjectLi
e,
the one it supplies can be submitted, or
o A Gantt charts produced in MS Excel.

Marking Schema for PM Task (Part 1 and Part 2):

Objectives Total Points
Presentation & Assumptions 5
Dependency Matrix 8
WBS 7
AOA 20
GANTT Chart 30
S-Curve 15

PLEASE NOTE:

A) The above is all of the information that you will be provided with concerning this PART1
task.
B) The information is not necessarily complete and may therefore require you to make
assumptions, if you do, then STATE THEM CLEARLY AND SUPPORT THEM.
C) Please prepare your submission in the same way that you would like to receive it if you were a
manager. You must submit a report as if it was to be given to your supervisor in a company.
D) ProjectLi
e is a free resource available for you to download.

About the submission:
In order to submit, we will be using Blackboard/Turnitin. Therefore, there will be two
submission links:
a) Coversheet submission link: submit only your cover sheet. Assignment Cover Sheets
(ACSs) is available electronically (Blackboard). A completed and signed paper ACS
must accompany all assignment submissions.
) PM Task – Part 1: Plan submission link: submit only your report in word or pdf
document (Gantt charts, tables, graphs must be included in the report).

Any assessment items received after the due date will attract a penalty of 10% of available
marks for each calendar day overdue. A block extension to a due date will only be granted in
exceptional circumstances (see policy - SPECIAL CIRCUMSTANCES AFFECTING
