Introduction
Dramatic play is one of the more common techniques utilized in the development of early childhood class attendants. This type of play is commonly refe
ed to as pretend or imaginative play. It involves giving a child a character in life such as that of a doctor, teacher, artist or even a parent and permitting the child to impersonate that character. The critical observation in this case is to assess the audibility of a child’s communication skills and for them to be involved in the necessary social interactions. The social facet in this case differentiates the imaginative play from a child’s individual play (Kagan & Lowenstein, 2004).
In addition, it is important that one is able to make a distinction between social drama and immature play. Immature play is simply non-creative and repetitive, and is practiced by children in lower ages of childhood. Older toddlers between ages four and six should be able to display a given set of skills other than that of impersonation. For example, the child should also be able to use the appropriate language as that character would. Equally important is whether the child demonstrates all the appropriate responses (Bredekamp, 2004).
