Question 1:
The Shelter has grown significantly over the past 13 years. What are some of the red flags that might be why the nonprofit has been in turmoil?
There seem to be various red flags that might be the reason for the nonprofit shelter to be in turmoil such as the multimillion dollar operations done by the shelter that went ho
ible; the financing situation of the shelter was the major issue due to negligence of the members as they were more into bleeding the money. The business transactions conducted by board were the major concern as there were no systematic bids for hiring the architectural services in the shelter, the property of shelter was transfe
ed directly to one of the board director named Burdine before making any appraisal and was also not offered to sale for Public (Cole, 2018).
Question 2:
The organization has a long list of services, saves the lives of thousands of animals, and has popular fundraisers. Why then are they in financial trouble and what recommendations would give their leadership so the organization would be sustainable?
a) Financial:
Shelter was not making proper planning on how the money should be spent in order to make sure that mission of the shelter is achieved. It is recommended for the shelter to focus on analyzing the cost and expenses of the shelter or the organization to be successful (Cole, 2018). It should also focus on cropping the money expenses for purchasing home for members of the board as it is a non-profit organization and by using the funds on members of board is resulting into shortage of funds as well as it is unethical.
) Fundraising:
Even though organization has popular fundraisers such as Coughlin estate, due to improper inside deals of the shelter there is shortage of funds as they didn’t had proper strategy for raising the funds. It is important for board directors of organization to make sure that funds are used for the mission of organization and not for personal benefit. The focus should also be made by entire organization to form proper strategies through which more funds could be raised.
c) Programming:
The programming of organization was not proper as most of the board members never responded to anything and attempt was made on covering it up or hiding it but not addressing the issue. It is recommended for board of directors to be more competent in order to make sure that shelter and organization is able to sustain.
d) Infrastructure (Staffing, Facilities):
The facilities and staffing of the shelter were limited in the beginning but while expanding and developing the veterinary hospital as well as rehabilitation center for animals, proper bidding method was not utilized by the organization. It is recommended to the organization to seek proper bids for architectural development as it helps in saving money with proper comparisons as well as should also make sure that there is enough experience with the service provider.
Question 3:
What is the cautionary tale from this case study about what the organization did and what they should probably have done when they got the large bequest?...
