Introduction
A non-profit organization is one that is run by a board, and is a company whose sole purpose is to serve society. It is a private organization, and has a formal organizational structure, and a board of directors. However, the sole purpose of the organization is to benefit society and those that need it. The organization generally runs on funding by the government, or some other private agencies (Sargeant & Macquillin, 2016).
The following paper looks at the management of the non-profit organization called Casa de Esperanza. It is a shelter for women who face Domestic Violence, and is run by a board of directors, volunteers and staff. It looks at the issues of the organization, and recommendations on how they can be resolved as well.
Case de Esperanza
The main issue for Casa de Esperanza was trying to find out their identity. The board, along with the leaders, had to decide between being a Latin service organization, which is what they were, and a shelter for victims of domestic abuse. In recent years, the organization has seen that victims of domestic abuse are from all walks of life, and just being a shelter for Latin women, or women of colour would not help the organization in their goals (Selden, Sowa & Sandfort, 2006).
However, they have also become a Latin service organization, having community education and outreach work, such as tutoring, and teaching ESL English to children. This meant that they could no longer call themselves an organization focused on helping and fighting domestic violence. This led to the creation of many issues for the organization, since the main debate had been around the labelling of the organization. The organization was both a community centre for children and women, as a well as domestic abuse shelter for Latin women, and women of colour. This caused an identity crisis for the organization, and they needed to look into it, so that they could properly define themselves, and who runs the organization as well.
Another issue for the organization was the rapid expansion. This had led to chaos for the organization, and for the staff members as well (Speckbacher, 2003). Casa was soon expanding into becoming one of the largest organizations for women of colour, and this also meant that many other organizations have been refe
ing all women of colour to Case de Esperanza, which meant that they were increasingly side-stepping on their responsibilities as shelters for abused and battered women. Thus, it is important to keep that aspect of the shelter in mind.
The other main issue was related to funding. During the late 1990s, most of the funds that the organization received for their upkeep were from the government. However, this was rapidly becoming an issue, since the need for the organization was increasing, and the number of women who were coming to the shelter was also increasing at a very rapid pace (Mitchell, 2018).
