Materialism is a tendency to consider material objects such as assets, comforts and luxury as the main priority. Materialism is a topic that is widely used in English literature by many English novelists. English novelist Jane Austen used to display materialism is her novels. Materialism was one of the genres of Jane Austen’s novels. She primarily analysed and criticised the British society of the 18th century through her novels. Most of the Jane Austen’s novels were based on women’s dependency on marriage to find a favourable social status and economic security. Jane Austen beautifully portrayed materialism in her novel Northanger Abbey. Women’s insecurity regarding wealth and her dependency on marriage to secure economic stability was shown in Northanger Abbey.
