Acids and Bases
(Assignment for May 6 and 7, 2021)

Part 1: Comprehension Questions

1. How did the A
henius definition fail to explain the behavior of bases?

2. Compare and contrast the A
henius, Brønsted-Lowry, and Lewis definitions of acids and
ases. How are they similar? How do they differ?

Part 2: Brønsted-Lowry Acids and Bases
Label the Brønsted-Lowry acids and bases in each reaction. Draw an a
ow to show the direction
of proton (H+) transfer.

Example:

?!? +    ??" ⟷??" + ???

1.                                                         ?!??# + ??" ⟷???#" + ?!?

2.                                                             ???#" + ?!? ⟷ ??#" + ?$?%

3.                                                             ??$ + ?!? ⟷ ??#% + ??"

4.                                                             ?!? + ?!? ⟷ ?$?% + ??"

Label the pH scale as acidic, neutral, or basic:

Part 3: Use the pH scale to identify if these substances are acidic, basic, or neutral (circle only
one):

a. Lemon Juice (pH = 2) (acidic, basic, or neutral)
. Seawater (pH = 6) (acidic, basic, or neutral)
c. Bleach (pH = XXXXXXXXXXacidic, basic, or neutral)
d. Milk (pH = XXXXXXXXXXacidic, basic, or neutral)
e. Ammonia (pH = XXXXXXXXXXacidic, basic, or neutral)
f. Hydrochloric Acid (pH = 0) (acidic, basic, or neutral)
g. Vinegar (pH = XXXXXXXXXXacidic, basic, or neutral)
h. Black Coffee (pH = 5) (acidic, basic, or neutral)
i. Orange Juice (pH = 3) (acidic, basic, or neutral)
j. Water (pH = 7) (acidic, basic, or neutral)
k. Drain Cleaner (pH = 14) (acidic, basic, or neutral)

Part 4: Label the pH scale on top with each of the substances in Part 3. Order those substances
y their acidity on the pH scale. Start with the most acidic on the left and end with the most basic.

Acids and Bases
(Assignment for May 6 and 7, 2021)
Part 1: Comprehension Questions
1. How did the A
henius definition fail to explain the behavior of bases?
Ans: This theory is applicable only in case of aqueous solution and not in terms of substance themselves. This theory is limited to bases which has formula of BOH in bases and hence can only tell about bases like NaOH, KOH, NH4OH etc. This definition fails to explain the bases which do not have the formula of BOH in them and hence it is a limitation.

2. Compare and contrast the A
henius, Bronsted-Lowry, and Lewis definitions of acids and bases. How are they similar? How do they differ?
Ans: As per A
henius an acid is a substance which increase the concentration of hydrogen ion in an aqueous solution and a base is a substance which increases the concentration of hydroxide ion in the aqueous solution.
As per Bronsted-Lowry acids are...
