The classical view of America is one that is relatively homogenous, a one-sided
history of white settlers coming and founding a new land, and in doing so setting the stage for
everything that followed. In the reverence towards the founding fathers, and the puritans, that
formed the foundation of modern American history, these articles have shown me that a
disservice is being done both to America as a nation and to the idea of America. The problem
is that the metaphor of the melting pot, and identification as an American, regardless of origin
or location, actually glosses over the differences between us that give America its strength.
America is a place born of minorities, composed of migrations that began well before
Columbus, and pretending that its history is that of a single immigrant or religious/political
group is to ignore that great Americans have always been those outside of this closed...
