PROBLEMS IN HOSPITAL OPERATIONS AND RECOMMENDED SOLUTIONS
    Many hospitals around the world are going through the same set of basic problems: shortage of nurses and physicians, overcrowded waiting halls, unhygienic conditions and long waiting hours. However, the two most important issues faced by hospital operations are- too many avoidable patient days and poor hygiene or unhealthy community.
Too many Avoidable Patient Days
According to a study performed by Caminiti et al (2013), more than 20% of the bed usage in the hospitals is inappropriate, increasing the risk of diseases caused by prolonged treatment and causing wastage of resources.
When the healthcare providers do not efficiently transfer the patients to other facilities or do not discharge them on time, it can result in increased number of patient days. The healthcare settings take many steps to reduce the number of patient days. The hospitals work in coordination with extended health care facilities and the nursing homes so that the patients could be transfe
ed to these places at weekends. This practice is mainly aimed to avoid keeping the same patients who are better in condition now, in the same units which can be used to provide healthcare services to other emergency patients. This problem can be attributed to poor patient flow, causing overcrowding of the patients who are waiting for the vacant beds and hence delay in healthcare.
