However, there is a trend in the UK that puts managers in a different role. This trend is manager as coach (MAC) and will be the focus of this assignment. Q1. What is meant by the term manager as coach (MAC)?
As the business is changing it demands managers to evolve from their existing portfolio of work and perform dual responsibility of not just managing the defined work but also coaching the subordinates to perform better. If one wants to become a successful manager, then one must develop a capability and intention to coach the subordinates. Manager as coach is one of the core skill urged by today's workforce of Millennials. Although, actions desired can be driven by using power and authority that comes with the role of manager but those actions are short-lived and outputs so derived are would be appalling. With reference to the article, “Reasons Managers Should Spend More Time on Coaching” (Weintraub, J. R. & Hunt, J. M., 2015), essentially there are three roles that compliments each other – managing, leading and coaching. MAC not just direct its employees/subordinates what is required but also facilitate them to achieve their goals. They believe in harnessing partnership and not authority. Essentially, MAC are not myopic with one specific result rather they have a
oader prospective to explore many possible outcomes. They focus on long term development rather than satisfying short term requirements and immediate needs.
Q2. Is this role more appropriate for leader or manager?
Managers like leaders are crucial for the success of the business, so I believe how both uses their power and authority to influence people is very important. Both of them have the capability to build a well-oiled machine of successful ideation and implementation or just a house of cards that can be scattered by simple blow. Interesting views were presented in the article, “The manager as coach as a driver of organizational development”, (Ladyshewsky, R. K., 2010). Well, with respect to leader it is not appropriate to follow any one style as today the business demands leaders to execute situational. leadership. Therefore, leader as coach wouldn’t always provide the results or solve the problem rather applying a situational leadership approach would be favourable for all the stakeholders involved.
On the other hand, a manager ideally handles a team ranging approximately from 1 (flatter organization) to 50 depending on the size of the organization. This role demands that manager goes beyond of just telling the subordinated what to do rather explore the strengths and weakness of his team and work out a plan that is most productive and efficient by incorporating the complimentary skills of all his subordinates. By helping the employees to improve their performance and providing them platform to horn new skills, manager is establishing strong bonds that result in long term relationships of groomed employees.
