Extraction
Objective:
The unit process extraction is one of the most important stage in many downstream processes mainly in biopharmaceuticals and pharmaceutical dose process. In these processes, the active ingredients are in combined stage which needs employ of different solvent to extract the targeted molecule from pola
lipid mixture. The well-known example is of extracting medicine from he
al plants where the active molecule is locked up with different lipid molecules.
The aim/objective of this experiment is to recove
isolate the molecule from the sample 1:1 of benzoic acid and p-dichlorobenzene, since benzoic acid plays a vital role in dissolution of organic solvent dichloromethane. The benzoic acid is recovered for reuse by using base (NaOH) followed by acid (HCl) method while p-dichlorobenzene is recovered by evaporation of organic solvent. Since organic phase are formed in the process it is difficult to separate/isolate compound using gravity filtration hence vacuum filtration technique employed to achieve near complete filtration in the reduced pressure range of 30-35 mm Hg. The special assembly of test tube trap is used in vacuum filtration for prevention of back contamination by water.
Extraction:
The schematic representation of experimental step as expressed in below image,
Procedure:
1. Place 2g of 1:1 mixture of benzoic acid and p-dichlorobenzene and 30 mL of methylene chloride, in a stoppered separatory funnel; shake to dissolve. After shaking
iefly, invert the funnel and open the stopcock cautiously to release the pressure.
2. Close the stopcock, shake again and release the pressure as before. Repeat until no more gas is released.
3. Clamp the funnel upright at the joint or suspend it through a ring, and add 10 mL of 5% NaOH through a short stem funnel. It is also a good idea to place a beaker under the separatory funnel while it is suspended, in case the stopcock leaks.
4. When the two layers are...
