1.List some ways that you see religion having social control in the everyday world.
Religion significantly influences how society's social norms and values are shaped. It has a significant impact on how individuals think and behave in daily life. Here are a few ways that religion influences society –
· Moral principles: Most religious traditions have a set of principles that serve as a guide for its adherents' conduct. These norms can influence how people view many social issues and aid in controlling how people behave in a society.
· Institutions: For people of religion, religious buildings like churches, mosques, and temples function as social hubs (Chriss, XXXXXXXXXXThey provide people a sense of community and a way to get in touch with people who hold similar opinions and values.
· Education: Educational institutions, such religious schools and colleges, are part of many religious traditions. These institutions work to spread and uphold the principles and morals of the faith.
· Leadership: Religious figures like priests, pastors, and imams frequently have a big influence on the beliefs and actions of their followers.
2. What are some sacred items that you’re familiar with? Are there some objects, such as cups, candles, or clothing, that would be considered profane in normal settings but are considered sacred in special circumstances or when used in specific ways?
Sacred items that I am familiar with would be the Bible my grandparents have passed down for generations. This book is large and very bold and I do believe in certain circumstance those who are not align with the same religion that references the bible would be offended. Having a Bible in normal settings make those around you believe you are forcing your belief to those within eye distance but that is not the case at all.
Sacred objects can differ significantly between religions. Religious books like the Bible, Quran, or Torah, religious symbols like the cross, Star of David, or crescent moon, and religious artifacts like statues or relics are a few examples of frequent holy objects. When utilized in certain religious rites or ceremonies, commonplace items like cups or candles might acquire hallowed status in some religious traditions. For instance, the chalice used during Mass is revered and regarded as sacred in the Catholic Church. Similar to Buddhism, Hinduism also regards some objects as sacred and uses them in ceremonies. Examples include sacred beads and temple bells (Arthur, 2020).
3. In U.S. society, do you believe there is social stratification that co
elates with religious beliefs? What about within the practitioners of a given religion? Provide examples to illustrate your point.
Social stratification and religion affiliation are related in the United States (Goode, XXXXXXXXXXSome religious sects, like Mormons and Jehovah's Witnesses, have a propensity to live in a more economically and socially marginalized way relative to the rest of society. On the other hand, other religious groups, including Episcopalians and Reform Jews, are frequently connected to higher levels of wealth and social standing. Social stratification based on things like money, geography, and degree of education is possible, even among adherents of one faith. For instance, persons of various socioeconomic levels may have diverse beliefs and behaviors within the Catholic Church.
4. Do you believe the United States is becoming more secularized or more fundamentalist? Comparing your generation to that of your parents or grandparents, what differences do you see in the relationship between religion and society? What would popular media have you believe is the state of religion in the United States today?
It is a complicated and nuanced matter to discuss the situation of religion in the United States. Some claim that as fewer Americans identify as religious and as more people value reason and science over faith, America is becoming increasingly secularized. However, there is also proof of a rise in religious fanaticism, especially among some Christian and Muslim organizations (Hardy e al., XXXXXXXXXXYounger Americans have a tendency to be less religious and more secular than earlier generations. A decline in church attendance and an increase in interest in spirituality and nontraditional religions are signs of this trend. Religious organizations are frequently portrayed in the media as radicals or outliers, with religion in the United States being seen as a cause of conflict and division. Reality, however, is considerably more convoluted, with religion complexly influencing American culture and society.
