  • In this project you will be using the Stat_Grades.savdatafile that is found in Doc Sharing under the Instructor-Graded Projects:
  • Not all questions require the use of the Stat_Grades.savfile.
  • You may insert your answers, including any charts, graphs, or output, on this document.
  • Write your responses using complete sentences and include appropriate references.
  • Be sure to put your name on this document and save it to your computer.

1.There are many variables in the Stat_Grades.sav data set that can be used to describe the students in the class. Use the variable “Year in School” and answer the following questions:

a. What type of data does the variable “Year in School” represent? Are the data discrete or continuous? Explain the Level of Measurement used to assign numbers to the “Year in School?”

b. Which measure of central tendency is best to use to describe the variable “Year in School?” What does that measure tell you about the students in the Statistics Class?”

c. Explain which measure of central tendency is LEAST appropriate to describe the variable “Year in School?

d. Choose an appropriate graph to display the variable “Year in School.” Create the graph in SPSS, copy the graph and paste it below. Be sure the graph is titled and fully labeled.

2. There are many variables in the Stat_Grades data file that can be used to describe the students in the class. Use the variable “Short Form IQ Test Score” and answer the following questions:

a. What type of data does the variable “Short Form IQ Test Score” represent? Are the data discrete or continuous? Explain the Level of Measurement used to assign numbers to “Short Form IQ Test Score?”

b. Which measure of central tendency is the best one to use to describe the variable “Short Form IQ Test Score?” What does that measure tell you about the students in the Statistics Class?”

c. Which measure of central tendency is LEAST appropriate to describe the variable “Short Form IQ Test Score?

d. Choose an appropriate graph to display the variable “Short Form IQ Test Score.” Create the graph in SPSS, copy the graph and paste it below. Be sure the graph is fully labeled.

3. Use the variable Total Course Points and the variable Final Grade to describe the performance of the 105 students from the statistics class in the Stat_Grades data file. Be sure to include at minimum: at least one appropriate graph, and the appropriate measures of central tendency, and any other numerical descriptors you feel would help convey to the reader the performance of the students in the class. Be sure to include a summary statement after conducting your analysis.

4.Which one of the five Quizzes has the strongest relationship with overall student performance represented by “Total Course Points?” Create the appropriate graph to show the relationship between the Quiz with the strongest relationship and Total Course Points.

5. What is the numerical measure of the strength of the relationship between “Previous GPA” and “Final Exam Points?” What kind of a relationship exists? Create the appropriate graph to show the relationship between the Previous GPA and “Total Course Points.”

6. The following output was generated for the variable “Ethnicity” from the Stat_Grades data set.

a. Explain what each measure tells you about the Ethnicity of the students in the Stat_Grades.sav dataset.

b. If you were running the Frequencies procedure on the variable “Ethnicity” why or why not would you include each of these measures?

7. The graph below (which is not from data in the Stat_Grades data set) shows the relationship between the time off (vacation hours) and GPA for 100 adult students.

a. What type of correlation is displayed?

b. Which of the following would you estimate to be the correlation?

XXXXXXXXXX

XXXXXXXXXX

XXXXXXXXXX

XXXXXXXXXX

8. The graph below is a histogram showing the ethnicity of the students from the Stat_Grades data set. Is this graph the most appropriate graph for these data? If so, why? If not, why not and what graph might you suggest be used?

9. In an article on the relationship between parents or extended family members who are addicts and the likelihood a child would become an addict the correlation is claimed to be statistically significant with a reported correlation of r = XXXXXXXXXXDo you agree with this claim? Why or why not?

10. Use the following graph to decide which measure of central tendency would be the most appropriate to represent the data and why it would be the most appropriate.

 In this project you will be using the Stat_Grades.savdatafile that is found in Doc
Sharing under the Instructor-Graded Projects:
 Not all questions require the use of the Stat_Grades.savfile.

1. There are many variables in the Stat_Grades.sav data set that can be
used to describe the students in the class. Use the variable “Year in
School” and answer the following questions:

a. What type of data does the variable “Year in School” represent?
Are the data discrete or continuous? Explain the Level of
Measurement used to assign numbers to the “Year in School?”
Solution:
The year in school presents the year a student is in of the school
i.e. it a discrete variable. The level is increasing for knowledge as
the year of student in school increases. Ordinal measurement is
used for year in school.

. Which measure of central tendency is best to use to describe the
variable “Year in School?” What does that measure tell you about
the students in the Statistics Class?”
Solution:

2

The best measure of central tendency would be mode since it
would give us the frequency of year in which the maximum students
of class belong to.

c. Explain which measure of central tendency is LEAST appropriate to
describe the variable “Year in School?
Solution:
Mean would be wrong measure of central tendency since it would
give a representative year which is near to all students in class,
which would not be true.

d. Choose an appropriate graph to display the variable “Year in
School.” Create the graph in SPSS, copy the graph and paste it
elow. Be sure the graph is titled and fully labeled.
Solution:
Histogram

2. There are many variables in the Stat_Grades data file that can be
used to describe the students in the class. Use the variable “Short
Form IQ Test Score” and answer the following questions:

a. What type of data does the variable “Short Form IQ Test Score” represent?
Are the data discrete or continuous? Explain the Level of Measurement
used to assign numbers to “Short Form IQ Test Score?”
Solution:
The IQ test scores are a student’s IQ level measured as discrete numbers
out of 130. The greater the score, better the IQ. Thus scale is used to
measure the IQ.

. Which measure of central tendency is the best one to use to describe the
variable “Short Form IQ Test Score?” What does that measure tell you
about the students in the Statistics Class?”
Solution:
Mean is the best measure for the IQ test scores, since it tells on an
average how much a student in statistics class has IQ.

c. Which measure of central tendency is LEAST appropriate to describe the
variable “Short Form IQ Test Score?
Solution:
Quartiles would be least appropriate since there is no use of determining
what the lower 25% or upper 75% IQ scores would be.

d. Choose an appropriate graph to display the variable “Short Form IQ Test
Score.” Create the graph in SPSS, copy the graph...
