The health status of a community is the result of a myriad of factors impacting where people live, work and play. From public health policy to the built environment, community structures are integral to the decisions we make relative to health. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has developed Community Health Status Indicators or CHSI 2015. This is an interactive web application that produces health profiles for all 3,143 counties in the United States. According to the CDC (2015), “Each profile includes key indicators of health outcomes, which describe the population health status of a county and factors that have the potential to influence health outcomes, such as health care access and quality, health behaviors, social factors and the physical environment.”
Directions:
Visit the CHSI 2015 webpage and perform a search for data on the county/ state combination closest to their residential location. If your county/state combination does not yield usable results, please choose another combination that is local to you. Once you have your location results, review the county demographics and summary comparison for all indicators.
