It never had been easy for the African Americans to lead a peaceful and hazard-
free life in the American society where the majority has always been that of the whites. 
From the very years of their enslavement and in the post-slavery era the blacks in this 
nation have been discriminated in myriads of ways. But the blacks did manage to 
survive the harshness the brutality rendered to them by the white dominated American 
society and they, through adoption of different kinds of survival strategies, have been 
able to sustain their life in the United States. Going through Brent Staple’s Black Men 
and Public Space, one can surely understand how pathetically a considerable number of 
blacks in the American society had to embrace the principle of acquiescence to protect 
themselves from severe and further oppressions at the hands of the whites.  
Brent Staple’s narration is a revelation of the pains and agonies that the blacks 
suffered from while trying to lead a peaceful and meaningful life in the United States of 
America.
