Determination of gas constant
PV = nRT can be used to find out gas constant. For this variables such as pressure volume temperature and no. of moles has to be determined. Experimental values as determined should be compared to the reference value as provided.
For ca
ying out the experiment, Mg metal is weighed and outer coating is cleaned off to remove the layer of oxide . Further, 20 ml of 0.1 M HCl is taken in small beaker and Mg is added to the beaker containing HCl to remove the outer coating of Mg metal. In the next step, 0.016-0.018 gms of the uncoated Mg is weighed. Further, in a clean dry boiling tube, pipette out 4 ml of 1 M HCl and add HCl. Mg reacts with HCl to give H2 gas. This H2 gas is measured by the syringe set-up, which contains a glass syringe connected to a bent glass tubing at the end of which there is a cork screw which closes the top of the boiling tube. After Mg is added to the boiling tube containing HCl, seal the mouth of boiling tube using the cork screw from the syringe set-up so that H2 gas released after the reaction can be collected into the glass syringe, which can then be measured. Syringe was pressed that there is there is good amount of pressure and syringe cannot be pressed further. This reading is recorded. After adding the metal into the boiling tube, H2 was allowed to pass through glass tube into the syringe for about 5 min. After 5 min, change in the reading was recorded. The experiment was ca
ied out in triplicates and H2 gas was recorded to be 0.1 ml.
