Chemically Activated Hand Warmer
Abstract
With an exponential rise in the world’s population, there is no wonder even if we are pushed to live in Antarctica. Perhaps, we would be left with only the option to evolve towards the climatic drive. Even the human inhabited places like Minnesota, Alaska, Canada, etc., need adaptive changes. One such invention to serve the purpose is the chemically activated hand warmer. It may not necessarily solve all the problems of the extremely cold weather, but would definitely be applicable in various important fields viz medicine in relieving pain, sports in harsh winters, construction to help labourers beat the cold and much more. 
Introduction
A chemically activated hand warmer brings about heat by either crystallizing a supersaturated solution or by oxygen activation of metal pellets. In both the ways, exothermic reaction is the underlying principle. Our focus is on the latter using powdered iron pieces, which on exposure to air, rust to forming iron oxide, thereby generating heat (G. RALEIGH). Such a product should meet heating, safety and other standards to reach its goal. Let us analyse it.
Product Specifications
· Iron filets are the back bone of this invention. They are to be finely powdered to minus 100 U.S. mesh or smaller to increase the particles’ surface area (Krupa).This in turn quickens the exothermic reaction. 
· The inner pouch can be of 30g approximately and generate good amount of heat, at least 200C more than the present weather (Come). A porous material like a cotton canvas should be used to allow permeation of heat. It should be placed in a non-permeable outer pouch. 
· The components of the inner pouch should include iron fillets, a salt like Sodium chloride to catalyse the oxidation of iron on exposure to air, water in the form of vermiculite, used as inert filler to help sustain the heat and prevent the components from conglomerating  
· For 150 parts by weight of iron used, at least 30 parts by weight of salt and up to 20 parts by weight of vermiculite should be used for efficiency. Other components’ amounts can be varied and found for efficacy.
