What leisure means to them 
Each of the people interviewed saw leisure slightly differently, and gave a different 
definition. The 14 year old simply saw leisure as when she did not have anything she was 
obliged to do, like schoolwork or chores. For the 23-year old, leisure was a very active thing, 
involving sports and facility use, and identified almost completely with recreation. The 33-
year old saw leisure as being a much more central part of her life, rather than simply time she 
could get away from work, defining it as the main goal of life.  
On the other hand, the 60 year old could not give a suitable definition for leisure; he 
said that since all of his time was effectively leisure time, he didn’t really see it as something 
he could sum up. This shows a general trend, in which as people get older they come to see 
leisure as more and more important within their life, and designing their lives so that they end 
up with almost all leisure time.
