I completely agree that it is a hard question to answer for the very reasons you identified. Cleary it does not matter if you are in the classroom or sitting in front of a future employer the key to success is to do your homework. Be sure to carefully, methodically and thoroughly research all aspects of the position for which you are applying. Remember, you want to be prepared for their questions but you also want to have questions of your own, to demonstrate your knowledge of the company, its competitors and the product line.
There are many different areas where you can go to obtain information on salaries sot that even the range you provide is consistent with the industry or market. I would encourage you to research average salaries of the specific job by using the job title. Here are a couple of websites that could provide some concrete direction: Payscale.com, salary.com, and Simply Hired’s salary tool. These are just a few that are routinely used.
