ABSTRACT:
Acetyl salicylic acid or aspirin 1 is chemically an aromatic ca
oxylic
acid, which also contain an ester group in its ortho position. It is popular

minor pains, cold, fever, minor inflammations etc. It can be used to

sulphuric acid. The amount of the compound formed depends on the
amount of salicylic acid taken. It can be compared to the theoretical yield.
Melting point is also determined to check the purity of the product. Salicylic
acid, which is the starting material of aspirin, can be prepared from methyl
salicylate by alkaline hydrolysis in a single step. Methyl salicylate is a
phenolic ester while salicylic acid is a phenolic acid. The yield and melting
point of this compound is also reported. 2
INTRODUCTION
1. One step synthesis of Aspirin from Salicylic Acid
There are many methods to synthesis salicylic acid, but the best and
easy method is from salicylic acid. Salicylic acid is 2-hydroxybenzoic acid.
Industrially is prepared by the ca
oxylation of phenol in presence of an
alkali using Kolbe – Schmidt reaction.
This can be acetylated using acetic anhydride in presence of
concentrated sulphuric acid to form aspirin. Acetic anhydride acts as the
source of acetyl group. Concentrated sulphuric acid helps I the removal of
acetic acid and hence acts as a catalyst. The overall reaction is an
esterification reaction.3
