Chlorine is widely used in swimming pools for sanitation. When Chlorine is added to water It forms Hypochlorous acid (HOCl) and Hypochlorite ions (OCl-). Thus free Chlorine consists in two forms: HOCl and OCl-. Hypochlorous acid is a good disinfectant and it controls level of bacteria and algae in water. It is also a good oxidizing agent and is not harmful for people. Hypochlorite ions are not good disinfectants.
