As suggested by Chai, Mattingly and Varma (2013) , one of the basic duties of the higher authorities in any health organization is to maintain the confidentiality and privacy of its health workers. The privacy may entail in a number of grounds including the maintenance of employee records, the financial status, customer lists as well as other personal data of the health care personnel, including records of sickness.
In the given case study, it was due to the utter negligence of the human resource management department that Sara’s sickness got known by all. Clearly, the Human Resources Department failed to keep its promise which caused Sara a lot of trouble. She faced a lot of hostility in the workplace. Her colleagues had started to avoid her. They were unaware of the details of Sara’s condition fully and although, she had resumed work after treatment, they chose to keep distance from her. Things got worse when one of their colleagues started displaying similar symptoms. The HR Department had failed to properly execute its duties in this case. Sara needed support from her colleagues but was subjected to apathy.
As noted by Grant et al. (2017),
each of privacy of individuals could lead to subsequent discrimination and harassment. If the patients whom Sara served came to know of her condition, they might also behave in the similar manner and subsequently, refuse to take her services further. They might also accuse the organization of negligence for having appointed Sara for the job. Hence, maintaining worker confidentiality is crucial, not only for the betterment of the worker, but also for the organization.
