Role of organization in prevention of infectious disease
As noted by Turnock et al. (1994), the organization should first try and remove the stigma associated with tuberculosis. In order to do this, the organization should encourage its employees to discuss their issues openly. The organization should inculcate in its employers that anybody could be affected by the disease and there is nothing to be ashamed of it. The organization should take steps to enlighten its employees about the various symptoms of the disease. This would be helpful for employees visiting patients at home as they would be able to recognize immediate symptoms and get medical attention from the initial phases of the disease. The organization should encourage its employees to take necessary preventive measures.
In Sara’s case, it could be a possibility that she herself acquired the disease while visiting some patient. In general, the organization should encourage its employees to take preventive measures. Sara should have been encouraged to mandatorily use a mask when attending the patients. It is the organization’s responsibility to inform her of the communicable nature of the disease and dissuade her from performing sputum inducing or aerosol treatments on patients as these could initiate increased coughing or sneezing in them leading to increased release of infectious droplets.
The organization should also conduct compulsory vaccination for its employees. Sara should have received the BCG vaccination for tuberculosis to prevent her from contracting the disease. After having acquired the disease, the organization should sanction a proper, paid sick leave to Sara for her recovery as well as reduced chances of her coworkers contracting the disease.
Organization’s role and responsibilities in providing safety to workers
As noted by Chai, Mattingly and Varma (2013), the organization has a major role in providing safety to its workers. The most basic step, as mentioned previously, would be to enlighten the workers about the disease. They should be intimated about the infectious and non-infectious phases of the disease, its initial symptoms of weight loss and reduction in appetite, recognizing which could help mitigate the disease from worsening by immediate medical intervention.
