Alkanoates are prepared from the ca
oxylic acids in which the -OH part of the
ca
oxylic group has been replaced by -OR group where, R may be alkyl or aryl group. Some
of the alkanoates structure alongwith their names are as given below :
Alkanoates are prepared by the acylation of alcohols or phenols in which the
acylating agents can be Ca
oxylic acid / H2SO4 or Acyl chloride or Acid anhydride. They can
also be prepared by reaction of Acids with Diazomethane and by Tischenko Reaction in
which aldehydes containing a-hydrogen atoms are treated with aluminium ethoxide.
Physical properties of alkanoates :-
1. Physical state.
Alkanoates are colourless oily liquids having a characteristic fruity odour. Most of the
fruits and flowers have their odour because of the esters present in them. Hence due
to this characteristic it finds its application in flavouring and perfuming industry.
