Goal setting and reflection-Vital to career development
Career development deals with managing a career in such a way that facilitates development and improvement in the course of one’s career (Mulhall, 2014; Tanoli, 2016). Even though career development may seem untimely associated with career, in reality, it encompasses one’s life. This is because, certain career skills are life skills and improvement in these leads to lifelong improvement. As such reflection on one’s self, skills and goals becomes an integral part of career development.
Self-reflection is an effective way of assessing one’s path in his life and career. It involves reviewing and contemplating on one’s experience to give shape to one’s future. A human being’s life and work is full of mistakes and misgivings and it is imperative that he learns from these to shape a better future.
Self-reflection even though complicated is an easy process. It involves asking oneself relevant questions, for example- What do you consider your strengths and weaknesses? How much have you achieved? What do you want for your future? Are you in the right direction? What skills can you develop to enhance your role? And so on…
As such, practicing self-reflection has helped me develop both as a person and a professional. I have learnt valuable life lessons and learnt how to deal well with others through self-reflection.
Personal Goals
Personal goal setting is an important area of interest for career planning and development. Not only does personal goal setting enhance one’s life, it also enhances his career and work life (Tanoli, 2016). Setting goals is the first step in the achievement of goals. That is why, I have undertaken personal goal-setting as an important part of my career development plan.
It is necessary to have goals but it is even more necessary to make them SMART as in Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Timely (Schaufeli, & Salanova, 2007).
Three of my personal goals
So, for my personal growth, I have specified three goals for myself. These are -
1- I want to launch a business in 5 years,
2- I want to become a better communicator by 1st June
3- I want to gain a Six Sigma...
