City Report: A Comparison and Contrast Study between Mumbai and Tokyo
Asia is a continent which now houses the largest number of megacities of the world. It is
noteworthy that most of the largest metropolitans are located in Asia. Asia is a continent which is
composed of both developed and developing countries and it consists of multiple countries
which must be termed as overpopulated. Day by day the concentration of megacities is
increasing in Asia and the economical boost experienced by the continent as a whole is one of
the primary causes behind such increase. In Asia one can find megacities like Tokyo, Seoul,
Hong Kong, Delhi, Mumbai, Karachi, Lahore, Shanghai, Tehran, Istanbul, Osaka-Kobe, Dhaka,
Manila, Singapore, Jakarta, and Bangkok and all these cities have one thing in common, that is,
the dense population concentration along with the concentration of economic markets. But apart
from such similarities there are myriads of dissimilarities which distinguish these cities from one
another. Hence, to explore more about the similarities and dissimilarities between two major
megacities of Asia the primary endeavor in this paper is to compare and contrast two of the
largest cities in Asia, Mumbai and Tokyo, and through such comparative study the economic,
social, and political conditions present in these cities can be ascertained and explored.
The primary similarity between Mumbai and Tokyo lies in the fact that both of these
cities are megacities with a dense population. It must be noted that “A megacity is a metropolitan
area that has a population of more than 10 million people” (“Comparing Tokyo and Mumbai”,
2012), and both Mumbai and Tokyo fit well to the definition. Due to increased rate of
u
anization both in India and Japan, the trend towards the expansion of megacities have been
observed and the outcome of such trend is the emergence of cities like Mumbai and Tokyo with
a dense population. Another similarity that can be found between Mumbai and Tokyo is that,
oth these megacities of Asia “have developed over the years to become financial and

administrative hub of their countries” (“Comparing Tokyo and Mumbai”, 2012). But in respect
of the economy of these two cities some basic differences are observable. Being the economic
capital of India (that can be considered as a fact to some extent) Mumbai is concentrated with
some major industries based on which the Indian economy has prospered. The city’s major
industries include finance services, textiles, engineering, information technology, and
outsourcing (“Mumbai VS Tokyo”, n.d.). Tokyo, the most important city of Japan, is also
composed of some major industries on which the economy of Japan is thoroughly dependant but
those industries are different than those which can be found in Mumbai. Unlike Mumbai, Tokyo
is primarily composed of industries like transportation, publishing,
oadcasting and agriculture
(“Mumbai VS Tokyo”, n.d.). But it must be noted that both Mumbai and Tokyo, in respect of
industries, have one thing in common, and that is, both these cities emphasizes strongly on
