What are the roles of the individuals in the scenarios?
Based on Roger’s actionsin the above scenario, he clearly depicts the role of a leader. His character shows a variety of characteristics that encourage team members to follow him that is what a good team leader is all about. The commitment shown by him towards the work inspiresother team members that further stimulate production within the organization. Not only is he confident in his own abilities but equally confident in the abilities of his team members as well. Another key point of a good team leader is the organized behaviour, which is depicted by the way he keeps detailed documentation of all the processes and specifications.
Linda on the other hand is more inclined towards company profits rather than teams goals and project deliverables.Lack of vision is mostly the failure of an organization but keeping that in mind, she holds the vision of a much bigger picture keeping all the latest industry trends in mind. This optimistic attitude of her makes hera perfect manager rather than a leader. Managers are the people, who put out fires, keep the employees motivated while keeping them on a task. Not only company, but also she is concerned about the employees as well, which is why she is planning a kick-off meeting for the employees.
Are they managers, leaders, or both?
Considering their characters both can be seen as managers but with Roger being a people’s manager and Linda being company’s manager. The character of Linda is more of a manager than of a leader as she does not possess the qualities that of a leader like being more inclined towards the company’s goals and visions with very less interaction with its employees. Managers create a vision for others which Linda had shown by developing a mobile application keeping in mind the competitors work and latest industry standards BUT the leaders help shape up that vision at ground level which Roger does by working closely with the employees. The character of Roger possesses all the qualities that a good leader must have like integrity, commitment, providing inspiration to others, passionate towards work and being confident in him as well as other team members. He is more determined to meet the deadlines and maintaining all the processes and documents.
What distinguishes management from leadership and managers from leaders?
Leadership is a quality while Management is a skill.
What people usually understand from “management”is managing a group of people to accomplish one single goal and the word "Leadership” refers to one’s ability to influence and motivate other people towards a common success(P.Kotter, 2017). Influence and Inspiration separate leaders from managers but this often is mislead by power and control.A manager is being followed because of the authority of the title it holds whereas a leader is being followed because of the influence or the beliefs he holds and not the title. A leader can be anyone in the team or organization but a manager represents the face of a company to the client(Eacott, 2011).
A manager is always focussed on the how and when part of a task keeping the company’s goal in mind whereas a leader focuses on what and why part keeping the end task in mind.A question now arises, is management possible without leadership or even vice-versa? The answer to that would be NO. For a successful and smooth organization, both management and leadership are inter-dependent on each other just like the clutch and
ake of a car, both can work separately without the need of other but in order to run a car both of them has to be there and are equally important.
Analyze the similarities and differences between leadership and management.
A good leader will always have a good management system. This is often considered that the words Management & Leadership go hand in hand but it’s necessary to understand that even leadership plays a key role in successful management. As a crucial part of management, the leadership behaviour impacts the environment in a way where every worker exceeds with gained knowledge and influence. Management is the process of managing and dealing with people of different age groups, thoughts & skills to achieve the common organizational targets. Whereas, Leadership is intelligence & capability to inspire, to make others you’re admirers, the capability to mentor, and the humanistic side of the business. During the early age of the 20th century, the passion for leadership increased (Eacott, 2011). Previous leadership hypotheses concentrated on what factors determine differences among leaders and their devotees while ensuing theories suggested other factors like specific aspects as well as skill levels. Early initiative deals with different traits of recognized pioneers and devotees, while resulting speculations took a peek at different factors, for example, situational variables and expertise levels. Leadership is thus an effective part of management. It’s not necessary that a good manager will always be a good leader or vice-versa, both are similar qualities with unique talents holding the key to a successful and smooth organization (P.Kotter, 2017).
