Introduction
	The structural-functional perspective seeks to understand how society works as a system by examining how different institutions and social structures contribute to social order and stability. This perspective views society as a complex system with different parts that work together to maintain stability and equilibrium. In terms of sexual orientation inequality, the structural-functional perspective sees heterosexuality as the normative and dominant sexual orientation that contributes to social order and stability. According to this perspective, heterosexuality is the only socially acceptable and legitimate form of sexuality because it is the foundation of the family unit and procreation. This perspective asserts that sexual orientation inequality is functional for society because it helps maintain social order and stability. By regulating and policing non-heterosexual behavior, society can ensure that people conform to traditional gender roles and norms, which in turn maintains social stability. This perspective sees non-heterosexual behavior as a threat to social order because it deviates from the norm and challenges traditional gender roles and norms. Therefore, it is seen as a form of deviance that must be controlled and regulated to ensure social stability.
Discussion
	Critics of the structural-functionalist perspective argue that it is too focused on social order and stability and does not adequately address issues of power and inequality. This perspective does not account for the ways in which social structures and institutions can perpetuate inequality and discrimination based on sexual orientation. For example, laws that criminalize same-sex behavior or prevent same-sex couples from adopting children can perpetuate inequality and discrimination based on sexual orientation. Structural-functionalist, conflict, and symbolic-interactionist theories offer different perspectives on the causes and consequences of environmental problems (Lin, 2021).
