Assignment 3: Logical Fallacies and the News
For Week 1, address the following in a three-page paper:
  1. Identify a current event or contemporary social issue that you are interested in analyzing using the critical thinking method. Your issue must be broad enough to sustain deep philosophical analysis and must have relevance to your community. This means that the issue should be one (1) about which reasonable minds can disagree, (2) that concretely affects people’s lives and (3)that requires a solution. Issues that only affect a few people or have only a minor impact are probably too narrow. Issues that you are not open to examining with an open mind will also not work well for this assignment. For some topic suggestions, you might want to browse some recent episodes of PBS’s Frontline series or the website of a reputable news organization.
  2. Identify at least two news articles on your topic located using the South University Online Library and/or reputable news outlets. Make sure that the articles you choose present at least two different perspectives on the issue or event you choose and include information that you can use to develop your arguments and analysis. If you cannot locate two news articles on your topic, or if all of the articles share the same perspective, you should choose another topic. You should cite the two articles using correct APA citation.
  3. Analyze the issue using the critical-thinking method. Identify and explain any logical fallacies that might be involved in any of the relevant arguments.

Stem Cell Research
The issue of stem cell research has sparked the debate among religious figures and the

controversies cropping up due to the ethical dilemma faced by the scientific communities over
the philosophical view point. The controversy basically emanates from the ethical problem that
stem cell research requires creation, treatment and destruction of the em
yos. As far as
importance of the issue to mankind is concerned, there have been several evidences like survey
esults where more than 60 percent of respondents reported that the issue was either “very
important” or “somewhat important” to them. As mentioned previously, most part of the
opposition is from the religious and orthodox elites who believe that it involves killing of the
human em
yo necessarily.
The scientists have been enthusiastic in applying the findings from stem cell research to
solve the problems pertaining chronic diseases and organ failures due to accidents or disorders.
Stem cells are the totipotent cells which mean they have the potential to differentiate into cell of
any kind of tissue or organ and thus provide an enormous amount of opportunities in terms of
egeneration and healing which have not been possible by the advancements of medical science
so far. Various complex conditions like physical trauma, congenital diseases and degenerative
diseases can be treated by regeneration of body parts by stem cells extracted during em
yonic
stage. Due to this huge potential of em
yonic stem cells the scientific community has been
pleading to the US government for the state funding for the research which will help in making
faster advancements. Federally funded projects cannot use the stem cells and hence the research
is limited to the NGOs and private companies. The proponents of the stem cell research say that
the em
yo which is required to extract the cells is not embedded in the uterus and hence does
not possess any emotional or physical properties associated with human being. Therefore is does...
