Overview
Students must write an essay to discuss the pros and cons of the argument provided
elow before concluding and providing a recommendation. The assessment intends
to test students’ ability to comprehend the materials sourced from lectures, texts
and research. It also intends to improve students’ writing, analysis, and
argumentation skills and add to their understanding of the applicability of
organisational behaviour in the workplace.

Students will be assessed on the following criteria:

• Research
• Analysis
• Conclusions and Recommendations
• Structure
• Clarity of Written Work
• Presentation, Citation and Referencing Format

Details about each criterion can be checked by assessing the subject outline. It is
very important to note that research is a key criterion that will influence the mark
you earn. Research is considered appropriate when students make their arguments
y using peer-reviewed journal articles. While using a minimum of six (6) journal
articles is expected, students will only achieve a top mark in their research
component when they adequately use between twelve (12) and fifteen (15) research
sources, the majority of which are journal articles. Kindly note that using WIKIPEDIA
and other online encyclopedia is not allowed and may result in being given a fail
grade for the essay.

Introduction
Leadership and Management differs from each other in the context that leaders support their followers to grow in their profession as well as care for their needs, while managers try to imbibe the maximum outcomes from them. Servant leadership is one such leadership style that is a strategic amalgamation of both these approaches of managing the people of an organisation. It has been argued that by using this leadership style to manage the people in organisations, the employees are more dedicated towards their workplace and generate the maximum work productivity. However, there being a number of disadvantages to this management style as well, the present essay aims to analyse both the positive as well as negative aspects of this style, in order to determine if it is the best approach to be used in organisations.
Advantages and Disadvantages of Using Servant Leadership Management Style as the Best Approach to Manage People in Organisations
The key advantage of servant leadership is that it helps to create a sense of care by the leader towards their employees. Thus, employees not only connect with their leader, but also readily follow them. As mentioned by Abu Bakar and McCann (2016), the key essence of servant leadership lies in serving the group ahead of considering the benefits of own self as a leader in the organisation. Hence, the most common benefit generated from this perspective is that the leader is able to display themselves more as an administrator of the performances of their employees than being their governor, disciplinarian or rule-maker.
According to Spears and Lawrence (2016), servant leadership management style also caters to the needs of employees, when they are working in a diverse work environment. In other words, it could be stated that when in an organisation, there are employees from various cultural background and ethnicities, servant leadership can prevent the possible chances of clash between them. As supported by Lapointe and Vandenberghe (2018), it is so because each of them then would have the scope to personally manage the situation and thus, generate a pool of ideas that can also help to resolve the issues or execute the allocated tasks faster.
On the other hand, as argued by Karatepe, Ozturk and Kim (2018), if the leader uses autocratic leadership management style in a diverse workplace, then the employees might not be united towards a common goal and instead feel alienated from one other. Even if democratic leadership style is used, the perceptions of the leaders might not adhere to those of the employees, thus, infringing the latter from fulfilling their workplace needs. Other than these, there is also the benefit of generating a sense of loyalty from the employees’ ends, because they would feel obliged from the gesture that their leaders are caring towards them and they really look after the needs of their followers. Hence, as stated by Holten and Brenner (2015), this would also place the organisation in a positive light of giving most importance to the employees than they would to their organisational needs. If their needs are fulfilled before the organisational goals are met, the employees would be able to develop themselves even more and excel in their performance.
