In the golden words of a great author and management professor, John Maxwell - "A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way" In the evolution of business management, there have been different leadership styles that have greatly influenced organizational achievement, progress in the business and developing economies across the world (Goleman, 2000) As a students of business management, it is crucial to understand and interpret various leadership styles to recognize their effect on the organizational culture, employee engagement and overall performance. Furthermore, what is intriguing is there is no one style fits all the situation. As an active aspirant of corporate, it is evident that in this ever growing and changing dynamics a successful leader is one who is able to comprehend his/her situation and act accordingly. By the virtue of this essay, I have shared my takeaways and key learnings from the management style implemented by Sir Richard Branson’s. There is no doubt about his business acumen and his incredible ability to motivate, innovate and lead with the visionary approach. I truly appreciate his management style that act as a roadmap for many contemporary leaders. It actually shares the relevance of adaptability, empowerment as well as consistent pursuit of collaboration in driving business success and shape new frontiers in the corporate world. Furthermore, we will also analyse this with respect to the management style of Henry (Northouse,2019)
Relevance of different styles of Leadership
Bass (1985) discusses leadership and performance beyond expectations and essence of business is driven by it culture, intensity of employee relationship with the work as well as the company and strategic decision making are highly influenced by a leader’s style. There are different leadership styles like transformational, charismatic, transactional and autocratic which have different effects on organizational outcomes, employee morale and innovation. Leaders who understand each of these leadership styles can adapt their method depending on situations at hand and objectives of the organization thus leading to success and sustainability (House and Aditya, 2020)
Different types of Leadership
· Transformational Leadership - this style focuses on inspiring and motivating employees, encouraging innovation, as well as changing an organization towards a shared vision.
· Charismatic leadership - it is based on a leader’s charisma, enthusiasm and visions that leaders can use to inspire and influence followers.
· Transactional leadership - the focus is on task completion and compliance with expectations which are often clearly outlined in this case; there are rewards for good performance and penalties when targets are not met.
