Civil society is an idea that has gained a significant amount of force over the last 
decade or so. In retrospect, this should not have been a surprise, coming as a consequence of 
both substantial developments in the ability of people to communicate and organise, even if 
they are relatively resource-poor, and as global economic climate that has fostered the worst 
levels of inequality in history. 
As a result, across the world people have begun organising in order to either force 
change in their governments or to achieve that change through other means. In this seen, 
global civil society is something of a contradiction in terms, with each organisation being 
extremely localised and with very local objectives. Global civil society is global in the sense 
of being enacted in many different countries around the globe, but has no global objectives, 
since every nation has different civil needs. 
Against the backdrop, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP, 2013) 
has been fostering these efforts from a global perspective, allowing groups to share 
knowledge and abilities and bringing the skills and resources of the UNDP to a wide variety 
of local issues, such as malaria, poverty reduction,
