Agencies and communities all have particular cultures and particular natures, which impact and shape the behavior of all involved from administrators to human service professionals and consumers. For this discussion:
· Describe how the constructive, passive/defensive or aggressive natures of an agency or community impact the work of mezzo advocacy within each organizational culture.
· For each of these organizational or community cultures, comment on what skills one would utilize to move the agency’s or community’s decision-makers toward acceptance or recognition of one’s proposed mezzo advocacy problem.
Constructive:
- Collaborative, work together toward a common goal, effective, etc. (appeal to higher level goals as motivation)
Passive-defensive:
- Social norm is to interact in ways that do not threaten security, pressure to please and avoid conflict, do not question rules (Work strategically to convey how proposal does not threaten their security)
Aggressive-defensive:
- Focus on own needs, competitive perfectionism (May have to work alone to advance reform or appeal to desire for power)
