Muslims form the 3rd largest religious and ethnic group in Australia. Islam is the one of the most followed religions across the globe with over 1.8 billion followers and forms 24.1% of the global population. Still, there is a flak from the Western world against followers of Islam i.e. Muslims, due to commonality of their religion with famous te
orists groups. Due to wrong doings and practice of a very small percentage of population, rest of the Muslim population has to bear the
unt of this (Philip, 2015). Recently, the hatred and racist attacks against Muslims have increased around the world which gave birth to commonly used term “Islamophobia”. It is used to denote discrimination, exclusion, hostility, anxiety or suspicion directed towards Muslims or Islam. Australia had not been adverse to the phenomenon and were in news for reports of attacks and hatred towards Muslims. Though, many studies done in this regards have shown that the percentage of islamophobia in Australia is on a lower scale compared to other American and European countries. The number is somewhere close to 10% of the overall population which forms a group of fanatic Islamophobic people. It has been found out that the victims of Islamophobia are generally Muslim women’s and students. According to an article in “The Guardian” by Rabia Siddique, 79.6% of the victims’ forms of Muslim women and close to 47.7% of the Muslim children are directly or indirectly affected by this hatred. Also, another fact or figure which comes in relation to this regards of majority of perpetrators of Islamophobia in Australia, which is majorly men and forms approximately 68.5% of the perpetrator population. There has been a rise of many youth oriented Muslim organizations in Australia for their own people. Australian Muslim Youth Network, Young Muslims of Australia, Australian Islamic Youth Centre and National Muslim Youth Summit are some of the famous events or groups which work to engage and protect Muslim youth population in Australia.
