The CPD can be identified as a holistic set of activities performed by the nursing professionals to improve the personal skills and the career proficiency (Nursing & Midwifery Board of Australia , 2017). The CPD mainly involves the participation based study or interactive learning. It may involve the academic or e learning courses, training course, workshops, lectures, or participation in a case study. The CPD helps the Nursing Professionals to keep their knowledge and skills up to date and provides effective way to grow in their career. It helps the professionals to consistently improve the way they can become more effective and more professional in delivering quality care. It is a commitment to professionalism and self development.
The whole process of CPD accomplishes in 5 basic steps:
1. Reflect and Assess the Practice
2. Recognize the learning needs
3. Create a learning plan
4. Participate in the CPD activities
5. Reflect on the role of CPD in the Nursing Practice
In this report the CPD begins with the overview of the Nursing Practices and Nursing Midwifery Board Registration Standards. The study elaborates the definition of CPD and records the 10 hours CPD with sources. The report proceeds with documentation of the CPD activities with date, the learning needs, Action plan, Source, Description of topics covered and the Type of Activities along with the Reflection on Activities and Learning hours.
The study lastly elaborates on each of the activities, learning needs, topics discussed, Action plan and the reflection o activity and practice. The CPD here is based on Nursing Practice mainly confined to the practice of General ward Registered Nurses, registered under the NMBA Board.
Maintaining the accurate documentation is highly relevant in reflecting on the personal progress and achievements overtime. The documentation is the evidence of the Continuing Professional Development activities to the Healthcare facilities were they are working.
Nursing Midwifery Board Registration Standard
The NMBA Registered Nurses Standards for Practice involves 7 basic standards. However, this assessment aligns with basically three standards: Standard 2, Standard 4 and Standard 5.
Standard 2: Engages in Therapeutic and professional Relationship
Standard 4: Comprehensively conducts Assessment
Standard 5: Develops a plan for Nursing Practice
All the Standards are inte
elated and interpret certain criteria in the context of the RN’s practice. The criteria of each standard are interpreted for the practice of each Registered Nurse. The criteria encourage the development of scope of practice of individual nurses. They demonstrate ethical and legal guidelines issued by Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia, to be followed by the Nurses during their practice.
What is CPD?
Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is a set of formal and informal training and learning hours that must be completed by the nurses and midwives registered with NMBA (NSW Nurses and Midwives’ Association, 2017). The activities may range from education, teaching, and participation in professional committees for certain minimum hours during the course. Completion of CPD ensures that the registered RNs and midwives are compatible to deliver high level of care. The aim of CPD is to emphasize on continuous improvements in the professional expertise with increasing consumer demands and expectations. The completion of 20 hours of CPD activities is mandatory every year for the Nurses and Midwives in order to get registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia. The CPD must be relevant to the context of practice of the Nurse or Midwife. The CPD takes place in three steps. In first step, the Nurses are required to ‘Plan’ their learning needs, secondly they ‘Record’ the learning activities they undergo, and thirdly they ‘Reflect’ on how the learning has helped them. They also need to maintain documentation of the CPD evidence that illustrates why they chose that learning activity and how it contributed to meet the learning needs.
Planning the CPD makes the RNs more efficient with time (Nurses and midwife’s Association ,2017). It offers an opportunity to the Registered Nurses to identify and resolve the existing knowledge gaps in their practice. In some healthcare Organisations the CPD hours are converted into credit points. The CPD can be Active, Reflective or Self Directed. The Active CPD involves participation based and interactive study. The Reflective CPD involves no interaction to be based on participation. For instance the news articles, academic journals and case studies. The Self Directed Learning involves all the activities...
