The grand bargain and its various pitfalls is the focus of this book. The initial chapters discuss the main questions raised against the cu
ent professional work system prevalent not only in England but all over the world. The authors debate that the professional work system is inefficient, restrictive and highly profit-focussed. They believe that this should not be the case and that the work system should be open, more dynamic and have greater scope for development than it has today. It must actually be tailored in order to serve the people and society rather than the interests and pockets of professionals. This paper will focus on the four important questions regarding the grand bargain raised by the authors and how it is relevant to us today. It will also raise some points for and against these questions as well as discuss some problems that can arise with implementing any change.
The first question raised by the authors is regarding the option of developing new ways to improve professional work than is already prevalent. The authors concede that even though this option has not been explored, professional work can be improved in alternative ways and that it need not be restricted to the cu
ent profession and professionals. The problem raised along with this question is that alternative ways haven’t been explored yet and thus we are stuck in the cu
ent cycle of professionalism.
