INTRODUCTION: 
Consolidation of soil is a time-dependent phenomenon. Consolidation occurs when soil is completely saturated and it occurs on account of a load placed on that soil. In consolidation, volume of soil is reduced due to expulsion of pore water from voids of soil.  In laboratory, consolidation test is performed on a suitable undisturbed soil sample. This test is carried out in a special device called consolidometer consisting loading mechanism and specimen container which has a consolidation ring. The consolidation ring does not permit any lateral deformation of soil and porous stone discs are provided at top and bottom of the soil specimen to allow drainage in vertical direction, both ways.
