The difference between formalism and Platonism in mathematics is that mathematical 
objects are respectively considered to be abstractions or representations. School studies begin 
with mathematical Platonism – indeed, geometry tends to start with the Platonic Solids, a 
group of objects considered to be ideal in the sense of being perfect representations that allow 
one to calculate without the problems that real-world instances bring.  This is true of several 
branches of mathematics, as we will see, and tends to return at the higher levels of 
mathematical study. 
Platonist practices tend to occupy the lowest and highest levels of mathematical
