Adams in his world renowned book The Epic of America written in 1931 defined 
the American dream to be a dream “of a land in which life should be better and richer 
and fuller for everyone, with opportunity for each according to ability or achievement” 
(“The American Dream”, n.d.). It is a dream that the U.S. society will be based on 
equality, both political and economical, and men and women will achieve success 
through hard work and no kind of discrimination will come into play while deciding the 
success of an individual in the realm of the United States of America. But the American 
dream still today has remained a dream, far away from turning into a reality.  
In the words of the Nobel prize winner economist, Joseph Stiglitz, “Once seen as 
the land of opportunity, the U.S. today is grappling with rising inequality and a 
political system that benefits the rich at the expense of others, resulting in lower 
growth and risking the death of the American dream” (Bagchee, 2012). It is a fact that 
the two grand ideals of the American dream success and happiness are now gradually 
becoming two incompatible terms for the majority of the American populace. The racial 
discriminations and the gender inequality are gradually turning the American dream 
into a sort of myth that can never be achieved. Moreover, when Adam defined the 
American dream he meant a dream that signifies more of an idealism and freedom than 
mere material prosperity (Stanger, 2012),
